Arkansas Wavellite - Think Green

Avant Wavellite - Mauldin Mountain Wavellite

The two major locations for Arkansas wavellite are Mauldin mountain just west of Mount Ida in Montgomery County and the Avant area north of Lake Ouachita. Both locations are under BLM preference right leases. The lease at Mauldin mountain is called the Dustin & Austin Mine and is owned by Tim Hill. This lease is a small, part time operation with limited production. The earliest collected site is near the community of Avant on the northeast end of Lake Ouachita in Garland County. Some may know the area as Dug Hill. The deLinde wavellite and variscite 80 acre BLM lease is located to the east of the Dug Hill area and we acquired it from Mr. deLinde on December 6, 2007. This lease was only mined for about one week in 1976. This lease was only mined for about one week in 1976.  Read more about the history of this area. We started digging June 21, 2008. Clear Creek Mine is the sole source for marketing/selling the wavellite from both areas.

Wavellite is a phosphate mineral (hydrated aluminum phosphate), usually in various shades of green, ranging from dark rich emerald green to bright green, apple green, and pale green. The more uncommon colors are blue, yellow, brown and black. It is found in fractures in hydrothermal regions and in phosphate rock deposits sometimes call Bigfork Chert. The name is after William Wavell, the English physician who discovered it. Crystals are rare and wavellite usually forms in hemispherical or globular aggregates with a radiated structure. These are just a few of the specimens available from the Avant area.
